however, explains such secondary effects associated with subjective contours as changes in brightness or in apparent depth. In contradistinction to the physiological explanations are a number of hypotheses that are primarily cognitive in nature. Kanizsa (1976) maintains that illusory contours are merely an unusually strong example of the Gestalt principle of closure. Other theorists suggest, rather, that subjective contours emerge as some form of unconscious inference on the partial figural cues present in the inducing array, in much the same way as meaning is abstracted from incomplete outline drawings or cartoons (Bradley & Dumais, 1975; Gregory, 1972; Kennedy, 1976; Piggins, 1975; Rock and Anson, 1979). Coren (1972) has offered an alternative cognitive theory. He suggested that subjective contours result from the organization of the percept around implicit depth cues in the two-dimensional array, and offered demonstrations of the creation of subjective contours by the manipulation of depth cues. Halpern (1981) showed a manifest depth component by having subjects reproduce the apparent depth separation between a subjective contour and its background on a two-dimensional horizontal line. Subjective contours and apparent depth.

Schumann (1904) investigated the physical parameters which affect the perception of contour. He reported that for a contour to be perceived the prerequisite was some relatively abrupt local change in brightness or color. In the course of these investigations, however, he noted that under certain favorable conditions contours could be made to appear in areas of the visual field where the physica...

Mechanisms of purely subjective contour tilt aftereffects

Neurones tuned for second-order stimuli--those which have edges defined by properties other than luminance and colour--have been frequently observed in prestriate cortex and in area V2 there are neurones which explicitly and unambiguously signal the orientation of purely subjective contours, i.e. contours with no Fourier components at the orientation of the perceived edge [von der Heydt, R. & P...

Transparency: relation to depth, subjective contours, luminance, and neon color spreading.

The perception of transparency is highly dependent on luminance and perceived depth. An image region is seen as transparent if it is of intermediate luminance relative to adjacent image regions, and if it is perceived in front of another region and has a boundary which provides information that an object is visible through this region. Yet, transparency is not just the passive end-product of th...

Equal sensation curves for whole-body vibration expressed as a function of driving force.

Previous studies have shown that the seated human is most sensitive to whole-body vertical vibration at about 5 Hz. Similarly, the body shows an apparent mass resonance at about 5 Hz. Considering these similarities between the biomechanical and subjective responses, it was hypothesized that, at low frequencies, subjective ratings of whole-body vibration might be directly proportional to the dri...

Completeness of Reidemeister-type moves for surfaces embedded in three-dimensional space

In this paper we are concerned with labelled apparent contours, namely with apparent contours of generic orthogonal projections of embedded surfaces in R, endowed with a suitable depth information. We show that there exists a finite set of elementary moves (i.e. local topological changes) on labelled apparent contours such that the following theorem holds: two generic embeddings of a closed sur...
